The U.S. State Department has acknowledged an error after an inaccurate map of Africa was displayed during a presentation at the AIDS 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The map was intended to illustrate countries involved in U.S. international health programs, but every country it attempted to identify was incorrectly located. Among the errors, Nigeria was shown as landlocked in the Sahara, Mozambique was placed in the Horn of Africa, and Côte d’Ivoire was positioned on the opposite side of the continent.

The image also contained an artificial-intelligence watermark indicating that OpenAI tools had been used in its creation. The State Department said the mistake resulted from a team member hastily altering the slide deck shortly before the presentation. It said it took full responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation caused to attendees, including African partners
