French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reaffirmed their commitment to close bilateral cooperation during a meeting intended to highlight the Franco-German partnership. The discussions came against the backdrop of renewed tensions over the Future Combat Air System (FCAS), Europe's flagship next-generation fighter aircraft project.

The program has faced significant delays and disagreements between the industrial partners, particularly France's Dassault Aviation and Airbus Defence and Space, over work-sharing and intellectual property. The latest impasse has raised fresh doubts about the project's timetable and governance.

Despite the difficulties, both leaders stressed that cooperation between France and Germany remains essential for strengthening European defense capabilities and strategic autonomy. However, the contrast between political declarations of unity and the continuing problems affecting one of Europe's most ambitious joint defense projects has fueled questions about the effectiveness of major multinational industrial programs.
